For my "Olympic Hero" I chose Chinese athlete Fu YuanHui. Although she is certainly not a veteran athlete like Michael Phelps who has won his 20th gold medal, but she did earn a bronze medal for swimming. What's unique about her is her attitude towards the Olympics. Many athletes have expectations to earn a gold medal. She, however, wasn't even aware she earned a bronze medal and was utterly thrilled at the announcement and became an overnight star as the nation fell in love with her cheerfulness and positive attitude. In fact, there is a video of her reaction to the bronze and let's just say she has super hilarious facial expressions. Swimming with such grace and elegance, she's certainly not afraid to be emotional and is also a complete geek like I am. After the day she won a bronze medal, she returned later the next day to win ANOTHER bronze medal (I'm sure she's super pleased!) and when an interviewer told her that she was only 0.01 seconds from getting the Silver medal, she jokingly replied with "Then I blame it on my arms being too short! I used up all my mystic powers yesterday!" Fu YuanHui certainly has a personality and attitude like none other Olympian we've seen. link

I've chosen gymnast Simone Biles as my Olympic Hero. She is the first woman ever to be a world champion for 3 years in a row and has won the most world championship medals ever won by a woman, making her an inspiration to women athletes everywhere. She started practicing at a very young age (6 years old), teaching herself how to do complicated twists and flips by simply watching the older girls in her class. Gymnastics is all about control, timing, and precision, things that Simone certainly has already mastered at the ripe age of 19. Simone is someone who works hard and strives to be better than she was before. She's said before that she's, "not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I'm the first Simone Biles". I really like this quote because it shows that you don't have to chase after others, striving to be the best you is more than enough. As a woman, Simone (as well as many other women athletes) has had to constantly undergo being compared to men, comments on her appearance, and even being undermined as an athlete. With all of this, she still holds her head high and in the clouds, something I find truly amazing. I really love her air of gentleness as well as the power she displays when flipping through the air and wowing the audience. I also really enjoy seeing her bright smile even when on the competition floor, and how bubbly and engaging she is with the audience. I believe that Simone Biles is a superb role model to young girls everywhere, and really lives up to her title as the best female gymnast alive. Here is the link to her signature move, 'The Biles': link

My favorite Olympic Competitor this year is Simone Biles in Women's Gymnastics. She is only 19 and this is her first Olympic Games and she got the All-Around Gold Medal, and won the Tem Medal with the help of her Teammates. She is a 4 Time National All-Around Champion for the United States, She is a two-time world balance beam champion, She is also a three-time world all-around champion, three-time world floor champion, two-time world balance beam champion, and a member of the gold medal-winning American teams at the 2014, the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She is so compassionate about her teammates and so passionate about her sport. She is classified as a Artistic Gymnast.
